GUEST REVIEW: The Mara Dyer Series - Michelle Hodkin

Monday 15 December 2014

Summary

Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger. She wakes from a coma in hospital with no memory of how she got there or of the bizarre accident that caused the deaths of her best friends and her boyfriend, yet left her mysteriously unharmed. The doctors suggest that starting over in a new city, a new school, would be good for her and just to let the memories gradually come back on their own. But Mara's new start is anything but comforting. She sees the faces of her dead friends everywhere, and when she suddenly begins to see other people's deaths right before they happen, Mara wonders whether she's going crazy! And if dealing with all this wasn't enough, Noah Shaw, the most beautiful boy she has ever seen can't seem to leave her alone...but as her life unravels around her, Mara can't help but wonder if Noah has another agenda altogether...

This book trilogy is one of my favourites purely because I fell in love with three things:
  • The Plot
  • The Characters
  • The Endings (even though the second one wanted me to cry for ages)

The plot:

The plot of the three books of course are an after effect of what happened in the previous book (except for Unbecoming as it was the beginning which caused the after effects). The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is about a 16 year old girl called Mara who discovers she is an only survivor a terrible accident. And she is terrified. To make this even harder for Mara she cannot remember anything from the accident, which killed her three closest friends is very traumatic for her. To try and escape from the relentless guilt, she convinces her family to move the Florida. However, Mara’s misfortunes soon catch up to her and she finds herself finding it hard to run away from her problems. In the midst of all of her problems…she falls in love. What eventually happens to Mara? Does she defeat all the odds and comes standing tall with her lover by her side? Or does she have a reoccurring person from her past who is set in destroying everything she loves?

The Characters:

Mara Amrita Dyer- Mara is amazing, I love her so much! She is an authentic character, she is who I would like as a best friend. She is sassy, funny, likeable in every way, shape and form, she is all round amazing. Through the three books, I see her character develop from being that shy girl, who was trying to run away from the guilt, to at the end being a bad ass chick who faces her problems head first. She is just an all round person, and that is why I fell in love with her. I also emphasised (my favourite language technique) with her throughout the series because you get to feel what it is like being in her shoes and you get to see what it is like being Mara. Also just a hint about the book, Mara’s initials are M. A. D. (may or may not be in some use when defining her…) Noah Elliot Simon Shaw- no one understands, how much I have been waiting to type this post. Noah Shaw is perfection, mixed with perfection with a dashing of perfection and just a hint of perfection. Oh, and the secret ingredient is he is perfection. Noah seems like bad boy but really he is just a big softie. He is sarcastic (perfect for me because, guess who is also sarcastic?), he is gorgeous (who doesn’t want a gorgeous man their life?), he is tall and thin (we are a match made in heaven) and (bless his soul) he is trying to be a stud. I don’t know why he acting like a stud, he is fabulous whatever he does. Throughout the book, his character and my love for his character, ever grows for him and I just find him and Mara’s relationship even more intriguing as they have a strange bond and you throughout the series you find out who he is. Jude- Now I only have one thing to say about Jude. I do not like a single atom that he is made of. Not even one. But, he does make the book, that thriller, which I really love about the book. Now he ruins Mara’s life throughout the series and all the time I am screaming at the book, “No Jude go away.” and “NO ONE LIKES YOU JUDE!”. Really if he wasn’t the way he was, I don’t think that the book would have been successful or as enjoyable as it was. The endings: Now I cannot say what the endings were because that defies the object of this blog post but each ending, I found was significant for me, for the first two books, to carry on reading, and for the third, it was my closure. Even though I will never get my closure with this book ending as I am emotionally invested in these characters and their story, I still find that I have enough to keep me going. I hope that you have enjoyed this blog post as much as I have enjoyed writing it. This series is my favourite book series and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed writing it. I hope you like this blog post and shall see you soon. Ambi x (I need to sum up my journey through gifs, most will be about Noah well 99.9% of them)
